San Miguel de Allende A brief summary of the two festivals
by Jim Verner

Saturday August 21, 2010

7 novillos from Moreno Reyes Hermanos, five of which were mansos to varying degrees and two that charged with good style.

Ramon Fuentes, Mauricio Ocampo had difficulty with their novillos and trouble with the sword. Silencio.

Jose Narciso Candelaria badly tossed by a manso novillo and carried from the ring. Ramon Fuentes killed after multiple sword thrusts.

Miguel Casanueva worked his manso well and had trouble with the sword: Saludos.

Jim Verner: I drew a manso that ran off after most passes but did good work with the cape (Veronicas, Saltilleras, Gaoneras) and muleta work with both hands. A bajonazo before a well placed sword lost the ear: Vuelta

Juan Carlos Alvirez with a noble animal did a good job and killed on the first sword: oreja.

Carlos Allende with the best bull of the day made a varied faena and killed on the first sword: 2 orejas.

4 novillos from Santoyo and 1 from Moreno Reyes Hermanos, difficult mansos. Since I fought fourth and did not see the fifth, I am reporting what I was told.

Jesus Lara, Marcos Rueda, and Marco Antonio Rodriguez: Saludos for their efforts.

Jim Verner: I opened with veronicas with the largest of the day. After making a revolera, the novillo turned in and I attempted a remate with the capote in one hand, but the novillo cut in and I was caught and tossed and when I was getting up the bull tossed me from behind, kicking me as it passed and tearing off part of my ear and leaving me unconscious. None of the aficionados wanted to kill the bull, so it was handled by the novilleros who were acting as subalternos and they killed with trouble.

Juan Jose Alcantara with the least bad bull of the day, worked well on the left and killed well: oreja.

NOTE: I was taken to a hospital in San Miguel, where the doctor sewed up my ear with 10 stitches and the following morning I was seen by a specialist in Guadalajara, and am now on the road to recovery& and anxious for the next festival!
